Michael Szelest, P.E., S.I., has spent his career earning his credentials the right way, through education, field experience, and a commitment to meeting the highest professional standards in civil engineering. His background shows both the depth of his technical knowledge and the breadth of his hands-on experience across the commercial construction industry.
Michael earned his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UMass Lowell), where he was active well beyond the classroom.
He competed with the UMass Lowell Steel Bridge team at the 2018 annual competition held at the University of Vermont, and returned the following year when UMass Lowell hosted the 2019 competition at the University of Maine. He also served as Treasurer of Engineers for Change in 2019, where he contributed to a quick-response drone project to deliver medicine and medical supplies to hard-to-reach areas of Haiti.
In 2016 and 2017, Michael studied abroad at the Uniwersytet Jagiellonski in Kraków, Poland, on a scholarship from the Kosciuszko Foundation. The program ran for one month each year, immersing students in Polish language, grammar, history, culture, and the arts. It's the kind of experience that broadens a viewpoint in ways a classroom alone can't.
Michael holds an extensive portfolio of professional licenses and certifications across multiple material types and inspection disciplines:
Licensed Professional Engineer, Florida Board of Professional Engineers
Special Inspector, Florida Board of Professional Engineers
American Welding Society certified associate welding inspector
American Concrete Institute (ACI) certified structural concrete inspector
Post Tension Institute (PTI) certified Level 2 unbonded PT inspector
FDOT CTQP certified Earthworks Inspector and certified asphalt inspector
Masonry Association of Florida (MAF) certified Structural Masonry Inspector
International Code Council (ICC) certified structural steel and bolting inspector
Michael is a licensed member of the Florida Board of Professional Engineers, holding dual recognition as both a Licensed Professional Engineer and a registered Special Inspector. These aren't just credentials on a wall. They represent an ongoing devotion to the standards, ethics, and professional development expectations that the Florida Board of Professional Engineers holds its members to.
That same commitment carries into how he leads at ECS Florida, LLC, where mentorship and the professional development of his team are just as much a priority as the technical work itself.
